The Wise Man and His Companions
Written by Paul Pryor

How does the wise man chooses his companions. A wise man will choose his companions wisely for the wrong choice can have bring very bad consequences. The apostle Paul state absolutely that bad companions corrupt good morals (1 Cor. 15:33). The sinful man is convicted by the righteous conduct of the godly Christian. The sinful man therefore exerts are downward pull so as to bring the Christian's moral conduct down to his own level. Always remember that it is easier to pull a person down a ladder than it is to pull one up a ladder.

Those Christians who fool themselves into thinking that their righteous influence is powerful enough to overcome the overwhelming negative and corrosive influence of sinful companions will find themselves sadly mistaken. But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell. (Numbers 33:55)

The most important companion and man will ever find is a godly woman for his wife and the most important choice a Christian woman will ever make is the choice of a godly man for a husband. A good Christian spouse is a wonderful blessing. Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. (Proverbs 18:22) House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD. (Proverbs 19:14) The wrong choice of a spouse brings torment and misery. ... the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. (Proverbs 19:13) It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. (Proverbs 21:9) A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. (Proverbs 27:15)

One should choose his companions wisely because choosing good companions can make you a better person. He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. (Proverbs 13:20) Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. (Proverbs 27:17) Consider the benefits David received from Johnathon's companionship. And Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God. (1 Samuel 23:16).

The wise man will be very selective in his choice of companions. The right companions can make us better and stronger, whereas the wrong companions can be our undoing. Let us choose good Christian companions and let us strive diligently to be a good, godly and wise companion to others.
